2022 Masters Recap & Highlights

2022 Masters Recap

The 2022 Masters just wrapped up its 86th year of the tournament with Scottie Scheffler walking away with his first green jacket. The Masters tournament has a pretty iconic history- In 1933, legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment dealer Clifford Roberts founded the tournament, and the first one took place in 1934 with Horton Smith coming out on top as the winner.

Originally, the 72-hole tournament was known as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament after the club that hosts the event to this day. Roberts later proposed changing the name to "Masters of Golf," but Jones convinced him that the Masters was a more modest and appropriate title. Beginning in 1937, members of Augusta National began sporting green jackets to let visiting golfers know who to go to with questions and concerns. Starting in 1949, every winner started receiving one.

The 2022 Masters Augusta action was dramatic before it even began when news came that Tiger Woods intended to play despite having less than 14 months to recover from the serious auto accident that left him injured. Let's take a look at the Masters highlights as we recap the event that took place from Thursday, April 7 to Sunday, April 10, 2022.

Masters Round 1- Thursday

The media was buzzing for the Masters Round 1 with golf enthusiasts and novices eager to see how Tiger Woods would perform. Those who watched the tournament weren't disappointed as Tiger exceeded expectations, scoring a one under at 71. At the end of the first round, 24-year-old Sungjae Im was in the lead, playing an astonishing five birdies and one eagle. Im's achievement marked the first time a South Korean ever co-led a round after the first 18 holes.

Masters Round 2- Friday

Sungjae Im sat atop the leaderboard at the start of the second round. Tiger Woods' 71 had landed him in the lineup, but surprisingly, well-known pros like Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka did not advance.

Scottie Scheffler, the world's highest-ranked golfer, proved to be the star of the day finishing with a 67. That 8 under mark put him 5 strokes ahead of his closest competitor, and he remained there at the start of the third round.

Masters Moving Day- Saturday

Saturday was the Moving Day Masters round. So what is Moving Day at the Masters? The term describes when players push themselves the hardest in an attempt to make it into the final round. Due to their efforts, scores can change dramatically on Moving Day. Some pros rise to the occasion and soar ahead on the leaderboard. Others find the pressure too much and end up tanking their scores. After the end of the first two rounds, the top competitors advance. Usually, around 40 to 50 make it and everyone else goes home. Moving Day is the first time that those who made the cut play alone. This year, 50 players made it to Moving Day. With this year's tournament budget, all competitors who entered the final round were assured a cash prize of at least $37,800. Top prizes are in the seven figures, so you can see why players have so much incentive to shake up the rankings on Moving Day.

By the fifth hole of Moving Day, it became apparent that Woods' momentum would not continue when he four-putted. He completed the round with a 78 from two bogeys and a double bogey, marking his worst round ever at the Masters Tournament. Still, the general consensus was that Woods had shown strength and perseverance by playing at all. His presence also seemed to set a joyful tone for the day, as everyone celebrated his return to the tournament.

Although Scottie was at the top of the Masters leaderboard 2022, he didn't play his best round of golf either. He drove his ball into the woods at the 18, causing hearts around the world to sink and major disappointment from fans. He still managed to finish the round 1-under at 71, putting him nine under for the tournament. As a result, he held onto his top spot.

The action on Sunday included nail biting drama as Cameron Smith and Scheffler seemed neck and neck. It wasn't until Scheffler nailed a chip-in birdie that he was able to cement his lead ahead of Smith. On the 12th hole, Smith's ball landed in Rae's Creek, virtually ensuring he would not be able to return to the top of the leaderboard.

Interestingly, a user of BetMGM bet that Scheffler and Smith would finish the tournament at first and second respectively. Up to that mishap with the water hazard, the bettor was poised to win $93,000 on a $750 bet, giving him an extra reason to groan when the ball went astray.

Min Woo Lee made headlines for his performance. Although it was his first Masters, he tied the first-nine scoring record for the tournament at 30. Rory McIlroy proved to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the day. He shot 64 in the final round, tying the Masters record. His stunning play put him second on the overall leaderboard at -7.

2022 Masters Leaderboard- Who Won the 2022 Masters?

When the final round ended, Scheffler was at the top of the leaderboard at 10 under followed by McIlroy at 7 under, Shane Lowry and Cameron Smith at 5 under and Collin Morikawa at 4 under. As we previously shared, Tiger had his worst-ever Masters debut and finished in 47th place. Scheffler left Augusta with a green jacket, a gold coin and a replica winner's trophy. In addition, he received a cash prize of $2.7 million. At second place, McIlroy received a 1.6 million purse. All in all, the 2022 Masters awarded $15 million in prizes, a large increase over last year's funding budget of $11.5 million.
