Key Changes Happening to the 2023 PGA Schedule

One of the biggest changes to the PGA championship 2023 schedule is changes to the number of elevated events. For 2023, 13 events have elevated status, and all but the Tournament of Champions have purses of $20 million or more. This big change is designed to make the PGA more attractive to players in hopes of preventing more defections to LIV Golf. Apparently, the PGA plans to rotate elevated events each year, so 2024's top tournaments are likely to include different names.

In 2022, the top players all agreed to appear at these 13 events in addition to participating in the majors, giving golf fans more guaranteed opportunities to watch the best in the game compete. On the downside, that means there's less of a chance of seeing the big names play at the other 30 non-elevated tournaments.

A few other changes for the 2023 season include:

  • This is the last time the PGA will have a wraparound schedule that begins in September of the previous year. In 2024, all season events will be held during the calendar year.
  • The Farmers Insurance Open will run from Wednesday to Saturday to avoid conflicts with the NFL Championship broadcast on Sunday.
  • The winner of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship gets an invitation to the Master's this year.
  • The FedEx Cup Playoffs will have 70 players, down from 125. Only 50 will advance to the BMW Championship and 30 will go on to the Tour Championship.
  • Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, hosted the CJ Cup for the first time from October 20 to 23, 2022. Information for 2023 has yet to be announced.

Planning on Attending a PGA Event This Year?

If you're hoping to head to a PGA event this year, here are some tips to make your golf getaway a success:

  • Register early: Many of the big events for the PGA require you to register in advance to buy tickets. Get on board early because they typically close once they reach a maximum number of entrants.
  • Consider daily tickets: Daily tickets tend to be available longer. You may be able to buy individual tickets to see the whole event, but expect to pay more if you do.
  • Don't forget about credit card perks: Check to see if your credit card company offers discounts or priority purchase perks for PGA events. Also, check to see if your card provides any discounts for hotels and airfare.
  • Book accommodations early: Hotels and Airbnb units will fill up fast in the host city. If you're registered for tickets, consider making a reservation just in case. Make note of how late you can cancel and still get a full refund.
  • Explore package deals: Some events have ticket and travel packages that allow you to reserve everything and get your tickets for the event for one price. Check out the event website for more information.
  • Browse the official site: Before the big day, check out the official website for the event to find maps and information about amenities.
  • Refer to the guide for the event: The venue will send you an official spectator guide in advance. Read over it carefully, so you know the rules for the day. Be aware that there may be a dress code in place.
